Zeratul by Tokoldi Zeratul by Tokoldi
Edit 3: Forgot to say... I relied heavily on an illustration by Glenn Rane, aka ~Arsenal21 when I painted this. Kind of like a master copy, especially for the colour and lighting. Here's my main reference pic: [link]

----
Edit 2: Ok I found out what was going on! It is deviantArt's fault. I uploaded a smaller sized version and displayed it at its full resolution, instead of uploading a higher res and displaying smaller. Apparently deviantArt's scaling messes up the colours. It's a slight change, but for those of us particular about our colours it's a bit annoying >.< Anyway... colours fixed, yay! Once you click the image to display at full size you should notice the shift the green psi blade takes in colour. Happy it wasn't just me being a noob xD

---
Edit: The green is displaying a lot warmer than it does in Photoshop. If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know how! I've run into this problem before but have yet to figure out why this happens and how to fix it >.<

Zeratul :D
From StarCraft!

'Tis a practice painting. Going for Blizzard style.

Great job, looking very pro already...can easily be mistaken for actual art more than fan art - keep it up, we share the same dream ;)

I was using yours as reference. Tried to copy the colours and some of the lighting. Still have a lot to learn in that regard, so I figured I'd do something like a master copy we do in traditional figure drawing classes at uni. I probably should have specified that in my description. Will do that now.

(I lost my message commenting on this yesterday!), but seriously Tokoldi - you nailed it, this is a stunning addition to your beautiful portfolio, you have the style and the forms and materials are reading really well, Blizzard may just end up applying for you before you get round to applying for them! Awesome work, a gem and something to be proud of

What was your "technique" or process for it to get Blizzard-y? For example, what have YOU noticed that makes the artwork look like Blizzard style?

Getting the proportions right, first off. I had someone emphasize that for me and I'll be paying much closer attention to it in future pieces as well. For colours I looked to a painting by Glenn Rane. I started by picking the colours he used and then adjusting as necessary, but it gave me a solid base. Painting technique I just did what felt natural. I've been studying MrJack's work for a long time now, and while I don't think I have quite such a painterly style as him, studying his style has really helped form the way I paint. So I guess just paying close attention to what Blizzard artists do and trying to recreate it is what was key. And listening to critiques and applying them to the work :D

Perfect. I admire & have been studying both those artists so hopefully I'll be as successful as you in my next Blizzard painting (except for the Blizzard oil painting I'll be doing... eek). Looking forward to more work! And thanks a bunch for sharing!

Just practice a lot and you'll see the results. Focussed practice with specific goals in mind. You've probably heard it a million times, but the more you think about what you put down the better it will be, the faster you'll progress. Much respect for tackling the oils. If you can do that you can do anything. Really looking forward to seeing that oil painting finished :D

I think usually the .psd file will look cooler because it was in CMYK mode but saved as an RGB. (All I know is I always set my files to "Adobe RBG (1998)" at the start and save at the highest setting, if it's for portfolio) sorry if you already knew all that, but that's the most I know. ^^; Otherwise, I just test final images out on two monitors calibrating for warms and cools, since I have to assume it'll look different on other people's screens.

That said, your ability to capture the Blizzard look is undeniable. :w00t:

And thanks for the reply to my colour display question :D The .psd file is already RGB. It's just with how it displays on deviantArt. I took screenshots and tried to make an image to show what I mean: [link]
Do the two even look different for you? xD If it does, any idea how to get deviantArt to display it right?

I tried it out on both my laptop monitor as well as my desktop. Yeah, there's a slight, very slight change in tint. But I wouldn't sweat it. ^~ It'd probably only be a problem if you were going to print it out as well; in that case I'd recommend [Adjustment Layer: Curves] and push the warms back up.

The problem is that it's displaying too warm, especially in the greens. I'll test it out on other computers and try to figure out what is going on >.>
Thanks for the help :D

Oh whups..! :O
(it might help if Zeratul wasn't standing on a bright white blank background) ^~; Even if it's a showpiece, the contrast comes off way too strong (at least on my eyes)
